OVERVIEW
The straight Archers build order can be a little slow to have a military presence. One option to resolve this is to open with Men-at-Arms, followed by Archers. This is a fairly tight build order on your economy so may not be suited to newer players. It also involves a lot of shifting of Villagers between resources so requires careful management. This does not require pushing deer but that would make it smoother. This build order is for a generic civilization so does not account for any specific bonuses. It is ideally suited to the Archer or ‘flank’ player in a team game.
DETAILED BUILD ORDER
Dark Age
6 ON SHEEP
Wood 0 Food 6
Gold 0 Stone 0
Total Vils: 6
Queue villagers in the Town Centre, build 1 house with 2 Villagers and 1 house with 1 Villager. Move 1 sheep under the Town Centre (use your Scout to 'collect' them if needed). Set the gather point from the Town Centre onto the sheep and shift-queue the Villagers onto the same sheep. Use your Scout to begin scouting the map, going in concentric circles around your existing vision. Make sure there is another sheep under the Town Centre, ready for when one finishes.
4 ON WOOD
Wood 4 Food 6
Gold 0 Stone 0
Total Vils: 10
Build a Lumber Camp with the first of these 4Â against the woodline, ensuring there is space to go around both sides. Have 2 Villagers on each side of the Lumber Camp.
1 ON BOAR, 1 ON SHEEP
Wood 4 Food 8
Gold 0 Stone 0
Total Vils: 12
The 11th Villager goes out to collect the boar. The 12th should build 2 houses before rejoining the Villagers collecting food under the Town Centre, either on sheep or boar if it is back.
3 ON BERRIES
Wood 4 Food 11
Gold 0 Stone 0
Total Vils: 15
The next Villager should build a Mill next to the berries and begin collecting from them.
1 ON BOAR, 2Â ON BERRIES, 1Â ON BOAR/SHEEP
Wood 4 Food 15
Gold 0 Stone 0
Total Vils: 20
The next Villager should go to collect the boar (this may need to be adjusted and come slightly earlier if the 1st boar is down to about 30-40% food remaining). 4th and 5th Villager is added to berries before adding 1Â more to the food under the Town Centre.
BUILD BARRACKS, 2Â ON GOLD
Wood 4 Food 15
Gold 2 Stone 0
Total Vils: 21
Build a Barracks with one of your existing Villagers, this needs to be completed by the time you click up to Feudal Age. Return this Villager to their previous task and add 2Â Villagers to gold.
LOOM AND CLICK UP
Wood 4 Food 15
Gold 2 Stone 0
Total Vils: 21
Research Loom, this can be queued behind the final Villager and then click to Advance to the Feudal Age. You may need to force drop resources from Villagers - again try to ensure it is queued up behind Loom to reduce idle time.
Advancing to Feudal Age
4 FROM FOOD TO WOOD, TRAIN 3 MILITIA, BUILD 1 FARM, QUEUE VILLAGERS
Wood 8 Food 11
Gold 2 Stone 0
Total Vils: 21
Move 4Â Villagers from food under the Town Centre to collect wood, staying with 1 Lumber Camp. Train 3 Militia as soon as possible. Use one of the Villagers collecting sheep to build a Farm. Make sure you have already queued a Villager for when you reach the Feudal Age and have a House built ready.
Feudal Age
RESEARCH MEN-AT-ARMS, BUILD ARCHERY RANGE, RESEARCH DOUBLE BIT AXE
Wood 8 Food 11
Gold 2 Stone 0
Total Vils: 21
Immediately research Men-at-Arms, then use 2Â Villagers from berries to build an Archery Range, returning 1 of these to berries afterwards. Research Double Bit Axe when you have the resources but prioritise producing Villagers if you have to choose.
1 FROM SHEEP TO GOLD, 1 FROM SHEEP TO FARMS, 4 MORE ON GOLD, 3 FROM SHEEP TO WOOD
Wood 11 Food 7
Gold 7 Stone 0
Total Vils: 25
As the food under the Town Centre is close to finishing, move 1 of the Villagers to gold, build a Farm with 1 and move the other 3 onto collecting from the 'straggler trees' around the Town Centre. Add the next 4 Villagers to gold in order to maintain constant production of Archers.
BUILD A SECOND ARCHERY RANGE, THEN MORE FARMS, 1 VILLAGER FROM BERRIES TO BUILD HOUSES
Wood 8 Food 11
Gold 7 Stone 0
Total Vils: 27
Use a Villager to build a second Archery Range as soon as you have 175 wood. After this, build a farm every time you have 60 wood, collecting from 'straggler trees' in the meantime. Add farms until you have 11 collecting food (7 on farms with a Villager from berries now building houses). Ensure both Ranges are constantly producing Archers.
3 TO WOOD, BUILD SECOND LUMBER CAMP, BUILD BLACKSMITH, RESEARCH FLETCHING
Wood 11 Food 11
Gold 7 Stone 0
Total Vils: 31
Once you have built your second Range, build a second Lumber Camp and distribute your Villagers as evenly as possible between them (6 + 5). Then Build a Blacksmith and research Fletching as soon as possible. Once the Villager has finished building, send them to collect wood. Move your Archers out as soon as you have Fletching. It is wise to collect your new Archers at home after this so as to ensure that your reinforcements are not killed on their way forward. Move them in groups instead.
RESEARCH HORSE COLLAR, NEW VILLAGERS TO STRAGGLER TREES, THEN FARMS
Wood 12+ Food 11
Gold 7 Stone 0
Total Vils: 30+
Research Horse Collar in order to improve the efficiency of your Farms, setting the gather point for new Villagers onto 'straggler trees' until it is finished.
14Â ON FARMS, RESEARCH WHEELBARROW, 2 TO GOLD AND CLICK UP TO CASTLE AGE
Wood 12 Food 14
Gold 9 Stone 0
Total Vils: 36
When you have 14 Villagers on farms, research Wheelbarrow in order to make your farmers more efficient. Send the next two Villagers to gold in order to continue production of Archers and afford Castle Age. Then click to advance to Castle Age.
Advancing to Castle Age
CONTINUE ARCHER PRODUCTION, RESEARCH GOLD MINING, QUEUE VILLAGER
Wood 12 Food 14
Gold 9 Stone 0
Total Vils: 36
Once clicked up, ensure continuous Archer production. Research Gold Mining from the Mining Camp to improve the gold collection rate. Queue up new Villagers ready for reaching the Castle Age. If any farms expire will advancing, send these Villagers to wood.
Castle Age
RESEARCH CROSSBOW, BODKIN ARROW AND BOWSAW
Wood 12 Food 14
Gold 9 Stone 0
Total Vils: 36
Produce Archers as fast as possible, pausing production from one range upon reaching Castle Age to get the Crossbow upgrade. Research Bodkin Arrow from your Blacksmith to increase the attack and range of your Crossbowmen. Research Bowsaw from the Lumber Camp in order to improve your wood income.
IF YOU WISH TO GO FOR AN ECONOMY APPROACH, CONTINUE PRODUCING VILLAGERS, BUILD ADDITIONAL TOWN CENTRES
Wood 12+ Food 14+
Gold 9+ Stone 0
Total Vils: 36+
If your opponent's base is fully walled or you wish to play more economy focused, build additional Town Centres on reaching Castle Age. Continue producing Villagers and sending them to food and wood.
IF YOU WISH TO GO FOR A MILITARY APPROACH, BUILD A UNIVERSITY, RESEARCH BALLISTICS, THUMB RING AND LEATHER ARCHER ARMOUR
Wood 12+ Food 14+
Gold 9+ Stone 0
Total Vils: 36+
If you are able to take military engagements, build a University and research Ballistics to allow your Crossbowmen to hit moving targets more accurately. When you can afford it, research Thumb Ring from the Archery Range (to improve accuracy and fire rate of your Crossbowmen) and Leather Archer Armour from the Blacksmith (to increase the armour of your Crossbowmen). If you can afford it, add more Villagers to gold and wood add additional Archery Ranges to further increase your production. Add additional Town Centres behind this if you can afford to improve your economy.
